About Orientation
Each year we host an orientation for the new graduate students in Physical Education and Recreation.
When orientation takes place
This is scheduled just before the Labour Day long weekend which, in Canada, falls very early in September.
Orientation is normally held during the last week of August, and takes place over 2-3 days.
We run two orientation sessions
- one for international students
- General orientation – for all students
Attendance at orientation is required.
International students
We provide a pre-orientation session specifically for international students.
Purpose
- To assist students from other cultures to adjust to living and learning in Edmonton, and Canada
- and specifically the University of Alberta and the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation.
What you'll learn
- We explain some of the English language expressions we use, when referring to our courses, etc.
- We'll explain our expectations in terms of class participation and the general interaction with professors.
- An important activity is to provide students with a ‘contract letter’ which is required to obtain a Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN).
- The SIN is required in order for payment of graduate assistantships or scholarships.
General Orientation for all Graduate Students
The general orientation for all new graduate students follows the international orientation. All graduate students are expected to attend this orientation.
Purpose
- To meet all new students
- Provide an opportunity for new students to become acquainted with the Faculty
- Enable new students to connect with other new and current graduate students
- To learn about the role of the Graduate Program Office and the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research
Orientation also covers valuable information about
- registration requirements,
- tuition payment,
- graduate assistantship appointments,
- access to the building,
- Graduate Students’ Association Health Plan, etc.
If you do not attend
Students who do not attend orientation will be responsible for the information covered in this session.
