Deadline for admissions for Canadian and International students

  • Applications are accepted beginning October 1 up to March 1 for September and January admission.
  • Applications received by January 1 will be considered for scholarship nomination.

Online Application 2012/2013 (available October 1 to March 1)

  • Applications for the graduate program in Physical Education and Recreation must be submitted online. 
  • Apply online at the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research  (includes reference form)
  • Online application enables you to follow the documents that are submitted and added to the file. 

Graduate Studies Application Checklist

You'll require the following to complete your application:

  1. Online application and reference forms at the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research Note that the reference forms are available with the online application.
  2. An application fee of $100 CAD is required when you apply.
     

Mail hardcopies of the following documents to the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation:

  1. A letter of intent (1-2 typewritten pages) explaining what you are interested in studying, why you are interested (i.e. career goals) and why this is an important area. (free form)
  2. Official transcripts and certificates/diplomas from all colleges or universities attended, with the institution seal, date and appropriate signature.
  3. Official translation of foreign transcripts and certificates/diplomas with the original transcript in the original language. NOTE: Translations must be from the original university.
  4. Original document of proof of English proficiency (e.g., TOEFL, MELAB, IELTS) if the undergraduate degree is from a non-English university.
  5. A current curriculum vitae/resume.
  6. Minimum of three references from persons (preferably professors) who are knowledgeable about the applicant's academic and research potential and capabilities. NOTE: Referees may attach their comments to the reference form.
  7. Graduate Assistantship application. Download the application form from Forms and Handbooks on our website.

Important!

  • No application is reviewed until we have received all of your documents.
  • You may provide any additional information you believe will be helpful in evaluating your application
  • Mail (not email) all documents and outstanding documents, directly to the address below. You may send all the documents together but make sure transcripts and references are in sealed envelopes with the signature or official stamp over the seal.

How to check the status of your application

  • Check the status of your application on the University of Alberta's interactive web-based service, Bear Tracks
  • View any outstanding documents at Bear Tracks associated with your application.

Selection process

  • Once the Graduate Programs office receives all your documents, we assess your application to see if you're eligible for a scholarship nomination. 
  • Professors in your area of research will review the file and indicate if they will accept the applicant.
  • If you are not eligible to be nominated for a scholarship we'll review your application for admission in February and March.  It will take 4-6 weeks for a final decision.
  • A letter of acceptance will be sent by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research and an offer letter for graduate assistantship funding we be sent by the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation.
