Doctor of Philosophy

Students  may apply to complete a PhD degree in any of our areas of research.

Our graduate program has a wide breadth of research areas related to the interests of our professors.

In order to admit students to our program we must have a supervisor who has similar interests and  is willing to accept the  applicant.

Each PhD program is highly individualized and there are no specific course requirements for this degree.  Normally, the program consists of courses selected by the student and supervisor complemented by substantial research training under the mentorship of the supervisor and supervisory committee.

Normally, students must complete all requirements for the PhD degree within six years of the time they first register in the doctoral program.

Please contact potential supervisors to discuss your research interests and career goals.

  • Information about our professoriate, their research interests and contact information can be found under Areas of Research and Researchers
  • There is also an alphabetical listing of all faculty members with contact information

Master of Arts

Students can choose to do a course-based degree or a thesis degree (see Admission and Degree Requirements).

Course-based Master of Arts

This degree typically appeals to students who wish to obtain advanced knowledge in an area of interest.  Students complete 30-credits of course work including a research methods course (either PEDS 580 or PERLS 581), a “capping exercise” (PERLS 900), and 21-credits of optional courses.  Students may focus on a particular area of study (e.g., exercise physiology) or alternately, may adopt a multi-disciplinary approach.  Course-based students are matched with an academic supervisor at the time of admission.  The supervisor and student work together to develop an individualized program of study.

The most popular area of study in the course-based program is coaching. This focus is designed to prepare the student for a career in coaching through study of the scientific, organizational, and practical aspects of advanced coaching. Our professors and coaches work together to provide students with a rich experience in coach education.

Courses can provide students with cutting edge information on biological, behavioural, organizational, management and socio-cultural aspects of coaching.  In addition to the compulsory courses listed above, students interested in coaching may select from a wide array of optional courses such as sport physiology, sport psychology, and coach education.

Students may elect to take a 6-credit practicum (PEDS 572) under the supervision of a mentor coach. The mentor coach may be from the Golden Bears and Pandas Athletics program, a national team coach or a professional team coach.

The course-based MA degree may be completed in approximately 2 – 2.5 years of full time study. Students must complete all degree requirements within six years of the time they first register as a probationary student or as a candidate in the master's program.

Thesis-based Master of Arts

The thesis-based Master of Arts program provides an opportunity to work closely with a professor to obtain excellent training in research and is ideal preparation for advanced training through a doctoral program.  The MA degree requires completion of either PEDS 580 or PERLS 581, at least 9-credits of other courses, and the thesis.

Areas of research for a Master of Arts include:

  • Active Healthy Children
  • Adapted Physical Activity
  • Analysis of Human Movement
  • Athlete Health
  • Coaching Studies
  • Exercise Psychology
  • Recreation, Tourism and Leisure
  • Socio-cultural and Sport Management
  • Sport Psychology

The thesis-based MA degree may be completed in two years of full time study. Students must complete all degree requirements within four years of the time they first register as a probationary student or as a candidate in the master's program.

Please refer to our section on Areas of Research and Researchers.

Master of Science

The Master of Science is a thesis program only (see Admission and Degree Requirements)

The Master of Science program provides an opportunity to work closely with a professor to obtain excellent training in research.  The program requires completion of either PEDS 580 or PERLS 581, at least 9-credits of other courses and the thesis.  The MSc program provides outstanding preparation for advanced research training in a doctoral program.

The areas of research include:

  • Athlete Health
  • Behavioural Medicine
  • Exercise Physiology and Biochemistry
  • Biomechanics
  • Motor Control
  • Neurophysiology

The thesis-based MSc degree may be completed in two years of full time study. Students must complete all degree requirements within four years of the time they first register as a probationary student or as a candidate in the master's program.
