Firefighter Fitness Testing

The Work Physiology Laborary performs firefighter physical fitness evaluations for a number of fire departments including

  • The City of Edmonton
  • St. Albert
  • Strathcona County
  • Wood Buffalo
  • Grande Prairie and
  • Lethbridge

About the evaluations

  • Fitness testing is typically done as part of the application process for a specific fire department
  • You must be involved in the application process of the department in order to be tested in the Work Physiology Laboratory
  • You must register for the evaluation three weeks in advance of the department's scheduled test date(s)
  • Individual departments may have specific requirements before allowing applicants to register for fitness testing. If the department does not have specific information, the following information applies.

Location

All evaluations take place in the Work Physiology Laboratory (P3-40) in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation (Van Vliet Centre) at the University of Alberta in Edmonton .

How to get to the laboratory

  • Tests take place in the Universiade Pavilion (Butterdome). This is a large yellow building on the northwest corner at the intersection of 114 Street and 87 Avenue
  • Pay parking is available at the Education car park and the Jubilee Auditorium car park and lot which are on the northeast and southwest corners of 87th Avenue and 114 Street.
  • A large black and white sandwich board, with 'Firefighter Fitness Testing' will be standing outside the glass doors to the Pavilion.
  • Enter through the glass doors on the east side of the Pavilion
  • Once inside the entrance a sign will direct you to the Work Physiology Laboratory

Cost

  • The cost of the fitness test is $294.00 ($290.00 per test + $14.00 GST)
  • You must register for testing at least 3 weeks in advance of the testing dates assigned to a department
  • Payment must be made in full when booking your appointment to secure your testing time
  • There are NO refunds for missed appointments
  • There are NO refunds if you cancel your testing appointment without a valid medical reason and accompanying note from your physician.  With a valid medical note, you will receive a refund of 50%.

Duration

  • Expect to be at the University for 3 to 4 hours on the day of your test

Checklist

  1. Register for the physical fitness evaluation online at the University of Alberta Activity Registration Zone or by phone by calling 780-492-2231.
  2. Registration may also be completed on campus in person at the Activity Registration Zone on Campus (W-90, Van Vliet Centre)
    • If registering by telephone then payment must be made by credit card
    • If registering in person then payment may be made by credit/debit card, certified cheque or cash

    After registering and paying for your test, you will be sent or be given:

      1. a medical clearance form
      2. a description of the physical fitness tests. (see Generic Information Package - PDF in the right-hand column)
      3. a receipt for your payment

      Arrange an appointment with your physician to complete the medical clearance form

      1. Download and read the General Information Package carefully
      2. Follow the preparation instructions

      On your test day please bring

        1. Activity Registration Zone receipt as proof of payment
        2. Completed medical clearance form
        3. Photo identification, such as a driver's licence
        4. Personal belongings (see the Generic Information Package - PDF)
          • Shorts
          • Two T-shirts
          • Running shoes
          • Extra socks – several pairs
          • Sweats
          • Towel, soap
          • Lock (for a locker)
          • A light snack
          • Water bottle
